1. AVG AntiVirus Free 8.5. Actually the one I'm using in my Lenovo 3000 v100 laptop is the 8.0 version, but yesterday I got a message saying in order to continue keeping my computer safety, I have to update it to the 8.5 version before April 30th. I think the company is going to stop supporting the old version soon. I have been using the AVG Anti Virus Free 8.0 for years. For a short period of time, I switched to the PC Tools' anti-virus software because I'm using the firewall from PC Tools, but I finaly changed back to AVG. That happened when I was in Toronto, attending a math conference. I lived in a student dorm in the Toronto University. To use their web service, one's computer have to pass a test to verify it has good protection from virus. However the PC Tools anti-virus software could not pass the test, then I had to install AVG, which was suggested by them and passed the test.
2. Avira AntiVir Personal. This is also a free anti-virus software, whose nickname is little-red-umbrella. That comes from its icon I believe. I'm using this in my Thinkpad R61i laptop. There's no reason why I use different anti-virus software in different laptops. Maybe I just installed the one at hand and since it works well I don't want to be bothered to change it. The only thing I don't like is once it updates, a commercial page jumps out. You see one has to keep the antivirus up-to-date, so it happens at least once a day. But except for this, everything is fine.
3. PC Tools firewall. Although I removed the antivirus of PC Tools, I'm still using its firewall. It's simple to use. One change firstly choose a security level. Usually I choose middle, by which the ports some system program using are open, and all the other ports are banned. If one program tries to reach a port, one gets an alert, asking permit it or not. Of course, one can set rules for the reliable program, so that it won't alarm you again for those program. Recently after I updated the program, seems it got some new functions. It will give an alert when a program want to watch over some system service. En, it's getting better.
4. Ashampoo firewall. Another firewall I'm using in a different laptop. It's similar the PC Tools one. But it can set the permit to some special ports or all ports for a program. Ashampoo provided several free softwares, but this is the only one I'm using. Some others, like the disk defragmenter and the disk burner, may also deserve a try.
5. NoScript. This is not a stand-alone software. It's a addon for firefox. It can prevent a firefox user from some dangerous web pages. But of course one wants the scripts run for some websites, then have to setup for them. That's not difficult, and one can choose to let it run just once or forever.
It might be appropriate to add an annoucement here: I'm neither a computer major, nor a computer geeker. All my description is based on my experience, so there might be something wrong or not accurate. You are welcome to point them out to me, but I'm responsible to any damage from using the softwares I mentioned above.
